Gerunda was founded by the Romans almost two thousand years ago, at a time when the whole empire was carrying out a great activity of founding new cities. Due to Gerunda’s strategic situation, where land communications in a north-south direction were controlled, the Romans built powerful city walls, taking advantage of the natural landscape and forming a city of a practically triangular shape. The Roman city had a population of between one and two thousand inhabitants, living in an urban network of parallel and perpendicular streets.
