1ST CENTURY B.C. – 7TH CENTURY A.D.

Gerunda’s progress was linked to its condition as a mansio or staging post on the route followed by the Via Augusta, the principal roadway linking Hispania with the rest of the Empire. Locally, a dense network of roads and paths, which are still used today, connected the city with the villages of the plain and the coast. Like all old cities, Gerunda was made up of a walled enclosure surrounded by farmland, pastures, woods and quarries, the exploitation of which was focussed around the villas or country houses.
