After a period of sieges and wars in the 15th century, the city suffered a great reduction in population, production and commercial activity, reaching its lowest point in all the modern period. Later on the city developed, and between 1500 and 1800 it changed from being merely a manufacturing city to a military centre (mid-16th century), and in peacetime a bastion of the Church and the local aristocracy. Its economy also evolved, although very slowly and gradually, from a largely manufacturing base to an increasing importance of mercantile professions or trades related to the commercialisation of semi-finished products.
