General view of room with objects from the “developmentist” period of the city, as for example this Narcla motorcycle manufactured in Girona in 1960.
Following the Republican defeat in the Civil War, the creation of Franco’s new regime brought about a rift without precedent in the history of Spain. In the city of Girona, and the rest of Spain, the first two decades of the dictatorship were characterised by the submission of the majority of the population to a situation dominated by fear, repression and economic difficulties. The daily struggle to survive became the trademark of a society governed by a totalitarian and centralist political system. Just as the Nazis had done in Germany, and the Fascists in Italy, the Franco system abolished all traces of democratic freedom in Spain.
