One presents the bottom of contemporary municipal art

In the firm belief that such a collection only makes sense when known and appreciated by the local community, the City Council is setting up a project by which we hope to further public acquaintance with the works and the artists herein represented.

Girona City Council has been building up, through purchases and generous donations, a considerable collection of contemporary art, of which one part is on display in various municipal spaces, and another part is kept in our storerooms. The collection contains works by major 20th-century artists from Girona, and by other artists whose works have been shown in our city at some stage or other. We have here an artistic patrimony of exceptional value, not merely because of the works themselves but, above all, because its size and representativeness make this a unique collection through which we can trace the history of contemporary creativity in Girona.
An essential part of the project is this website containing information and documentation on both, designed to contribute to promoting research and bringing this artistic heritage before the public eye. We are starting a programme of temporary exhibitions in order to show all the works in the collection that are not usually on display, and thus consolidate a permanent space for presenting Girona’s contemporary art. We have also undertaken other initiatives, such as creating a permanent information and documentation post, and identifying all the art works on public display. We hope, therefore, that the inhabitants of Girona will become better acquainted with the municipal art collection, and come to consider it as part of our collective heritage.
