Jardí d'Infància air-raid shelter converted into a new room of the City History Museum

The Jardí d'Infància air-raid shelter was officially inaugurated as a new museum space by Anna Pagans, Mayor of Girona, and Joan Boada, Secretary General of the Catalan Ministry of Home Affairs, Institutional Relations and Participation, on May 20 at 11.30am.

Girona city will now have a new municipal cultural space which will be part of the Democratic Memorial and Memory Spaces network. The Democratic Memorial has collaborated in the placement of an outside information display stand, and in the tasks of damp-proofing, ventilation and refurbishment of the shelter.
The space is an extension of City History Museum Room 13, dedicated to the Spanish Civil War, and will provide an in-depth study of the passive defence network. The Bombs over Girona. Passive defence during the Spanish Civil War: barricades, trenches and air-raid shelters exhibition that can be seen inside is the result of research work carried out by Jaume Prat and Jordi Pericot, who also created the installation. The exhibition shows and pinpoints on a map the network of underground air-raid shelters that were fitted out, designed and built all around Girona city. The new municipal space will be open to visitors on Sundays at 11am from 30 May onwards, and also on Thursdays at 6pm from 1 July to 16 September. The visitor starting point will be Room 13 in the City History Museum, where there is an exhibition of original drawings of the air raids on the city, done by 9-11 year-old children from Karl Marx Primary School (now La Salle School).
Project curator Jaume Prat leads the Passive defence in Girona during the Spanish Civil War, walk at 11am on 2 May, 20 June, 26 September and 31 October, and at 6pm on 22 July and 26 August.
