Girona City Council re-opens, twenty years later, the air-raid shelter on Plaça del Carril (now Plaça del Poeta Marquina)

Girona City Council has re-opened the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) air-raid shelter located under the children's playground on Plaça del Poeta Marquina, twenty years after it was briefly opened up for the first time in July 1990.

The shelter was designed by Girona architect Josep Claret Rovira and built in the second half of 1938. It was the smallest of the new shelters made in the city, measuring 263.06 m² (of which only 150.09 m² was useable space) and providing protection for over 250 persons). The excellent building techniques originally used have left this sturdy shelter in very good state of repair, except for 15 cm of water which has accumulated inside due to filtrations.
The re-opening of the shelter consisted of a small exploration carried out by municipal technicians in order to assess its state of repair. This came about as a result of research and cataloguing of passive defence elements built in the city during the Civil War, as commissioned by the City History Museum and carried out by historians Jaume Prat Pons and Jordi Pericot Dilmé over the last year. The research work, due to be published later on, culminates with the 20 May inauguration of the new permanent museum room in the Jardí de la Infància air-raid shelter. The new space will host Bombs over Girona, the museum installation on the city's passive defence network during the Spanish Civil War, and will be open for group visits by prior appointment.
