Antoni Varés, in memory
The Girona History Museum wishes to pay a humble and sincere tribute to him.
02 MARCH 2016 – 17 APRIL 2016 (Sala El Celler)
The figure of Antoni Varés in post-war Girona's cultural environment represents, above all, the contribution of a creator who grew up with the values of freedom and cosmopolitanism of the Paris of the twenties.
Antoni Varés (Llagostera, 1909 – Girona, 1966)
His father tried to awaken his artistic sentiment from a very young age. Antoni Varés attended the Llagostera School of Fine Arts, where his teacher Rafael Mas introduced him to the basics of art. When he moved to Girona, Varés continued to acquire and perfect his knowledge in the city's School of Fine Arts.
Known and remembered as an amateur cinema pioneer in Girona, Varés left a film repertoire of 59 classified movies, some of which are still unedited or very little known. The artist's influence surpasses that of the connoisseur and man who introduced cinema to the city, given that he also stands out for his creativity in painting, caricatures and photography.
