Girona during the War of Succession

Exhibition under the Congress of Archives and Cultural Industries and the tercentenary.
During the War of Succession the city was the most important place to stop French raids.On 18 October 1705, Girona gave obedience to Archduke Charles of Austria. In December 1710 an army of 18,000 men commanded by Marshal Adrien Maurice de Noailles, Duke of Noailles, laid siege to Girona. Inside the city, the count of Tattenbach organized defense with about 2,000 soldiers, five hundred of whom belonged to the union urban militia. After six weeks of continuous attacks, middle and heavy rains were about to cause the lifting of the siege, the Bourbon troops opened a gap in the sector of Santa Lucia, in the northeastern corner of the city. On 24 January 1711, Girona capitulated, and the city after the failed siege of Habsburg in 1712, it remained under French control until the end of the war.
