Catalonia under bombardment
The 75th Anniversary of the bombardments of the catalan civil population and infrastructures.
07 AUGUST 2012 – 11 SEPTEMBER 2012 (Carbonera)
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was the first armed conflict in which aerial warfare played a decisive role. The intense bombardment of the Republican zone was an example of a new model of military conflict in which the rearguard turned into a war front and the civil population became the enemy's target.
This exhibition tells of the bombardments in Catalonia which caused thousands of deaths, casualties and material damage, focusing on the cities that were most severely affected by the massacre and destruction. The exhibition also concentrates on the people's resistance, a clear example of which was the construction of hundreds of air raid shelters across Catalonia to protect against the indiscriminate attacks by the fascist air fleet, made up of mainly Italian and German aeroplanes, which supported Franco's army.
