Girona and France, veering between war and peace, 1659-1939.
A new look at the Peninsular War. Bicentenary of the Peninsular War, 1808-1814
[ ENLARGE PICTURE ]
02 APRIL 2009 – 27 SEPTEMBER 2009 (Sala d'exposicions)
This exhibition covers very varied aspects of the Girona and Europe of the time, and in particular deals with all the ordinary people of Girona who lived through those conflicts, and not only with just a few well-know personalities.
This selection seeks to describe the sieges (1804-1814) and the cycle of warfare running from 1792 to 1823, in the context of relations of all kinds between Girona and France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and more particularly relations with the Midi and with the northern part of Catalonia lying across the border in France. And to provide materials for reflecting on war and peace in contemporary history and culture.
Curator: Genís Barnosell, lecturer in Contemporary History at the University of Girona.
Organised by Girona City Council.
With the collaboration of Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo. Obres Socials.
