Girona will be the setting for videoart at the first International Mapping Festival

From 30 July to 3 August, Girona will be the stage for the first International Mapping Festival. The city and its historical and artistic heritage will be the setting for videoart in which different artists from all over the world will compete in a competition for their work to become part of a route through some of the city's emblematic spaces.

The Mayor of Girona, Carles Puigdemont, presented the festival this morning, and emphasised that it will allow the city's heritage to be ‘reinterpreted from different perspectives'. "It is an attractive initiative that positions us within an international circuit of young creators of the future. In addition, we can showcase the city's cultural and tourism attractions, linking it to modern, creative visual languages. Multidisciplinary teams from all over the world will participate in the festival, working with full creative freedom and able to develop ephemeral creations to be enjoyed in Girona over the duration of the festival. It will contribute to extending the city's cultural and tourism offering", stated the mayor.

The new festival to be held in the city has been created following the positive experiences of two mapping events carried out in 2013: ‘La plaça dels museus', representing the city's different museums, projected onto the façade of the Girona City Council building to mark ‘Girona Flower Time', and the mythological origin of Girona projected onto the façade of Casa Pastors during the Sant Narcís festivities. The consolidation of Girona Film Office, created in 2008, with the aim of promoting the city as a setting for films and photo shoots, and the creation of BLOOM in 2012, a centre for technological excellence specialising in 3D, augmented reality and mapping, have also contributed to Girona's commitment to this new festival.
