Girona will commemorate this Thursday the Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Plenary Hall and will feature speeches by historians Daniela Rosenfeld and Ricard Valentí.

The city of Girona will commemorate the Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity this Thursday, January 29, in the evening. The Girona City Council and the Patronat Call de Girona have planned an institutional event in the Plenary Hall of the city hall building, which will be chaired by the mayor of Girona and president of the Patronat Call de Girona, Lluc Salellas i Vilar.

“Remembering the Holocaust is a duty of memory and collective responsibility. From Girona we reaffirm our commitment to the defense of human rights and the fight against hatred, discrimination and all forms of fascism, because only from memory can we prevent these crimes from happening again”, stated the mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas i Vilar.

In the Nazi extermination camps, during the Second World War, a genocide was perpetrated against the Jewish population and also against the Roma population. Adding other massacred groups, such as homosexuals, political dissidents, disabled people, or Jehovah's Witnesses, the number of people murdered was immeasurable. The event, commonly known as the Holocaust, is called Shoah by the Jewish People and Samudaripen by the Gypsy People. This year, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to all peoples who have suffered and are suffering genocides, and for this reason the event will make special mention of the massacre of the Roma population throughout Europe during Nazi rule.

January 27, the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1945, has been established as the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust and for the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity. In order to commemorate this day, this commemoration event has been organized in Girona.

The activity will begin at 7:30 p.m., and will feature speeches by the director of the Barcelona Jewish Film Festival and researcher of the history of the Holocaust and the Jewish People, Daniela Rosenfeld, and the president of the Rromanipe's association and researcher of the history of the Gypsy People, Ricard Valentí. It will end with a few words from the mayor, Lluc Salellas i Vilar, and the lighting of a candle in memory and tribute to all the victims of the Holocaust and all fascism.

This is a free activity, but prior registration is recommended by sending an email to reserves.callgirona@ajgirona.cat or calling 972 216 761.
