Jueus, de Miquel de Palol. Un drama medieval... i contemporani?
Lecture by Manuel Forcano
Wednesday, June 17,
Institut d'Estudis Nahmànides
The series of conferences The judaism and the dramatic arts will offer an approach to the relationship of Judaism with artistic and dramatic expression, both from the position of a Jewish author, as from the projection that the works treated give to concrete aspects of Judaism.
In this lecture we will approach the perspective that Miquel de Palol had of the Jewish history of the city, but also the perception and judgment of the Jews on the part of Christian society of his time. The play Jews is a drama set in the medieval Jewish quarter of Girona, but which is perfectly extrapolable, for its content and message, to those difficult times in which it took form and strength, in a whole convulsed Europe, the spectre of Nazism, of totalitarianism and intolerance.
Dramatized reading of fragments of Miquel de Palol’s work by Helena Martinell.
Manuel Forcano is a doctor in Semitic philology, a Hebraist, a translator and a poet. Until 2004, he was a professor at the University of Barcelona.
