The series of conferences The judaism and the dramatic arts will offer an approach to the relationship of Judaism with artistic and dramatic expression, both from the position of a Jewish author, as from the projection that the works treated give to concrete aspects of Judaism.
The Czech composer of Jewish origin Hans Krâsa wrote the opera Brundibar at the end of 1930, under the persecution of European Jews by Nazism. The play was subsequently depicted several times by Jewish children imprisoned in the Czech concentration camp of Terezin.
The conference will consist of a methodological explanation of what the repression of Jewish art, culture and music meant in the terrible times of Nazism. The role of the Terezin camp will also be presented as a clear anteroom to Auschwitz, and the meaning and function of that musical performance in Terezin will be discussed.
Josep Maria Terricabras has a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Barcelona and the University of Münster (Germany), he is professor of philosophy at the University of Girona and director of the Ferrater Mora Chair of Contemporary Thought (University of Girona).
