Book summary
At the end of the 13th century, Mallorca is a prosperous island and a crossroads of Mediterranean routes. Daniel Can, a young Genoese who loves the sea, arrives in the Ciutat de Mallorques and is welcomed, as one of their own, by a Jewish family. He soon falls in love with the city, sheltered by its walls and open to the sea, and discovers the value of a friendship that endures beyond death. His good relations with the royal house of Mallorca and with the Jewish aljama make him a renowned shipmaster who even sails through the Strait of Gibraltar along the African Atlantic coast.
