Lighting the Hanukkah candles

Thursday, December 17,
Museu d'Història dels Jueus

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is celebrated every year on the 25th of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar and commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Greek occupation (2nd century BC) and the subsequent purification and renewal of the Temple. The tradition is to light an eight arm candelabra, called Hanukkiah, gradually for eight days, every evening with a candle. This year the festival begins on the night of December 10th.

This year, on the last night of Hanukkah, we will carry out a different and symbolic lighting of candles, travelling through eight Jewish communities in the Mediterranean that will illuminate us by sharing their Sephardic heritage and traditions. The proposal has been coordinated by AEPJ and will include the participation of:

- Museo Ebraico di Venezia
- Aki Estamos - Les Amis de la Lettre Sépharade
- Comunità Ebraico di Casale Monferrato
- Izmir Jewish Heritage Museum-Izmir Project
- Museo della Padova Ebraico - The Jewish Heritage of Padua
- Patronato Call de Girona
- World Jewish Travel
- Museum of the Jewish People
