Inauguration of the commemorative plaque "Sculpture of Columbus" in memory of the artist Frank Meisler (1929-2018).
The Columbus Sculpture Panel commemorates the voyages of Columbus and the Jewish contribution that made the Voyages of Discovery possible. The Jews played a very important role in the scientific progress of the late Middle Ages, and Columbus used it especially in the fields of astronomy and cartography applied to navigation. Columbus himself wrote that all nations had learned from the Jews the principles of astronomy.
Frank Meisler's sculpture pays homage to three Jewish astronomers: Jacob Corsino (14th century), Josef Vecinho (15th century) and Abraham Zacuto (1452 - 1515).
