1970

Philips brings the first VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) onto the market, using cassettes. It is considered the first home video format.

1971

The U-matic, format appears, developed jointly by JVC and Matsuhita. Because of its small size and its affordable price it becomes very successful.

1973

Ikegami introduces the first camera for Electronic News Gathering (ENG), thus named because it meant that just one person, with an easy-to-handle video camera, could produce news items for television.

JVC brings onto the market the VHS home video system, which soon becomes the standard format worldwide, ousting its competitors in the home video market like Sony's Betamax format or the Philips V2000.

1977

George Atkinson creates the first video rental business.
