Jordi Savall i Bernadet

(Igualada, 1941) Gambist and musicologist, he studied at the Higher Conservatory of Music in Barcelona. He has been Director of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and founder of the group Hespèrion XX. In 1987 he created The Royal Chapel of Catalonia and, in 1989, the Royal Chapel, especially dedicated to early music. In 1997 he created the International Centre for Early Music and, a year later, his own record label (Alia Vox). He has won numerous awards, such as the Charles Cros Academy Award, the Golden Diapason, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the Jaume I Honor Award, the Medal of Honour of the Catalan Parliament, Artist for Peace Award from UNESCO, the National Culture Award 2009 and the Music for Peace International Award from the Government of Lower Saxony. In 2011 he became a member of honour of the Catalan Film Academy and won a Grammy Award for the best work of small orchestra in "Borja Dinasty. Church and Power in the Renaissance" (2010); he has also won the Spanish Academy of Art and Sciences Award, for "The Celtic Viol II".
