MOT. Festival de Literatura

Golda van der Meer and Maria Vila: Shtetl, rural life of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe in the 19th century

Activity within the framework of the festival MOT 2022

Wednesday, March 16,
Institut d'Estudis Nahmànides

This year the MOT festival takes place in Olot on March 17, 18 and 19 and in Girona on March 24, 25 and 26. This year's theme is "In the field. Literature and rurality" and revolves around the rural world seen from literature. The +MOT are activities thematically related to the common thread of the MOT edition, but organized from outside the festival.

The Nahmanides Institute for Jewish Studies participates in this initiative with a literary dialogue between Golda van der Meer (translator and writer) and Maria Vila (lawyer and writer) on works by authors in Yiddish on issues related to rural life of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe (in a shtetl) in the 19th century.

Most of the literary works written in Yiddish, in the 19th century, refer to the life of Jewish communities in Eastern Europe located in rural areas, the so-called shtetlekh or Jewish villages. The dialogue is structured through comments on works by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Dora Baron, Sholem Aleichem and other authors who wrote most of their literary works in Yiddish.

Free activity in Catalan language.
