In the middle decades of the twentieth century there was a wave of working-class migration from different regions of Spain to Catalonia. The arrival en masse of manual labour for industry and construction, together with the lack of housing at affordable prices, led to the appearance of the first shanty towns in some neighbourhoods of the big cities.
