The first vestiges of the Aigua Bridge have to be sought in the Roman period. At this point the Via Augusta crossed the natural barrier of the river Ter and joined both banks. The Via Augusta followed a natural route that joined Cadiz to Rome and was vitally important for trade and communications between the different cities and provinces.
